Welcome to another installment of the Phat Phree's Top 50. This month we are very proud to present a list that will certainly be an "instant classic" (to borrow a phrase from ESPN). So important was the accurate and complete accounting of on-screen rides, we went ahead and gave ourselves an extra day to polish it up. I assure you, it was worth the wait...
Compiling the 50 Coolest On-Screen Rides was a daunting task. Certainly "cool" is a subjective term, so there is some room for debate, but our criteria was a bit more specific. We tried to choose vehicles that were iconic of a genre, era or style. The imagination behind the car certainly came into play, as well as the actual vehicle's aesthetic and style, the role it played in the show/film, and it's general screen presence. We also considered the rarity of like-rides a bonus, but to be fair, certain vehicles-like the 70s Cadillacs-are so cool, that they are often used. This wasn't necessarily a negative, but certainly a uniquly cool car stood out in this crowded field.
In an effort to include some badass "rides" that often get overlooked in lists like this, we didn't limit it to cars--no, no. All "rides" were eligible. Another rule we enforced rather strictly was the one ride per show/movie. This meant that when it came to certain movies and shows, like the Dukes of Hazard, we were forced to choose between several very cool rides.
In the end, I think you'll find this list to be THE definitive list of cool on-screen rides. Enjoy.
Lt. Columbos Peugeot Convertible Columbo (1968 - present) 1959 Peugeot model 403 Grande Luxe Cabriolet
The 403 boasted such "extras" as available white-wall tires, heater-defroster, padded dashboard, reclining seats, electric clock, windshield washers, trip mileage counter and "an outside rear view mirror," as well as dual tone horns (have we ever heard Columbo use that?), and dual padded sun visors.
However, Peugeot points out that "The one thing we don't supply with every Peugeot is a radio. We don't make radios."
Jim rockford's firebird The Rockford Files (1974-1980) 1974 Pontiac Firebird Esprit 400
A gold color that photographed a light brown, this Firebird is the most generic bird ever to appear on screen, and that is exactly why it's here. After so many opulent and gaudy rides, this stock Pontiac, unlike its laconic driver, is strictly business.
River Rescue-5221 Police Boat Striking Distance (1993) 1986 25ft. Boston Whaler Guardian
Tagline: They shouldnt have put him the water if they didnt want him to make waves. *It should be noted that this is not a photo from the film. This movie is so terrible that not a single photo, with the exception of the movie poster, is available on the entire internet.
The Deathmobile Animal House (1978) Modified 1964 Lincoln Continental
Made from Kent "Flounder" Dorfman's brother Fred's brand-new Lincoln, the Deathmobile is quite the menacing ride. The paint job and the hood ornament (the head of Emil Fabars bronze statue) cement this as one of the coolest rides of all time.
Fred Sanfords Truck Sanford and Son (1972-1977) Modified 1952 Ford Pickup Truck
This faded-red 52 pickup was pretty damn cool right off the line, but the addition of the spray paint over the old name in a totally different color give this truck the I dont give a fuck attitude that really makes it stand out. Although it probably wasn't much of a "pussycatcher" for Lamont.
Riot Control People Scoopers Soylent Green (1973) Futuristic Police Dump Trucks with Giant Hydralic Scoop
In this cheesy sci-fi classic, Detective Robert Shaw (Charlton Heston) runs through a futuristic New York in search of the truth about Soylent Green, a revolutionary food source. In one scene the Soylent, which aint made from soy, runs short and the people riot. Out comes a line of future dump trucks with giant scoops on the front. They roll through the crowd scooping their human payload into the back and off to their demise. Soylent Green is peeeeooople! Soylent Green is PEEEOOOPLLLLE!
The Pacific Princess The Love Boat (1977-1986) Several Princess Cruise Ships
While the original Love Boat was pretty cool, Im holding out for the mid-80s version that had the Love Boat Mermaids aboard (including a pre-boob sag Teri Hatcher).
PEE WEE HERman's Bike Pee Wee's Big Adventure (1985) Highly Customized Single-Speed Cruiser Bike
So cool is this bike that rich man-kid Francis, who can certainly have his father buy him any number of new bikes, covets enough to steal it although, of course, the Buxtons "are not thieves". Pee Wee then goes on a cross country adventure to find it.
STEALTH The Highwayman (1987) A Government Supertruck modified Mack Truck/Attack Helicopter
This goddamn truck was also a helicopter. I was convinced that they had ripped this off from the cartoon "M.A.S.K." (not to be confused with the classic comedy movie starring Cher). Anyway, upon further review, "The Highwayman" was WAY cooler than "M.A.S.K".
Alonzo's Monte Carlo Training Day (2001) Modified 1977 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
King Kong dont have shit on this car! The hydraulic suspension and chain license place frame only add to the style of this classic piece of Detroit steel. And if you don't agree, Alonzo will slap the taste out of your mouth.
Isn't #41 a Monte Carlo? You can even make out the Monte Carlo hood ornament in the picture.

The spaceships from The Explorers and Flight of the Navigator
The Motorcycle Corey Haim rode in Silver Bullet
The Lawn Mower from Can't Buy Me Love
And Frankie's Huge ass surf board in Back to the Beach
Those were cool. Maybe an addendum is in order.
Do the writers even read the comments section? Is this a waste?

Wonder Woman's Invisible Jet (Lynda Carter's rack alone gets that vehicle into the Top 30);
The Partridge Family Bus;
and that alien spacecraft that Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum fly in "Independence Day" (yes, pretty lame movie, but Vivica Fox is in it, and lame show/movie doesn't seem to DQ a sweet ride).
