Me and Dwante(right)
I Have A Black Friend!
Hey everybody! I’ve got some big news that I think you’ll all be pretty excited about. I know I’m bursting at the seams! Are you ready?
I have a black friend! For real! I do! I know, it’s crazy, isn’t it? Well believe me, I feel weird writing it! It’s all still kind of sinking in on this end too. But I’m soooo excited!
It just sort of happened! I didn’t wake up one morning and say, “I think I’ll go out and get a black friend today”. I mean don’t get me wrong, I’ve always wanted a black friend. It just never really materialized.
I’ve had several black “acquaintances”. I was just never able to take it to the next level. But sure enough, it was just like my mom has always told me, “when it happens, you’ll know!”
I noticed Dwante right away when he started working in my office. He seemed nice enough. He was cordial when we’d bump into each other by the copy machine or in the cafeteria. But I merely interpreted this as polite, typical office banter.
I Love This Game!
But before I knew it, we were chatting up a storm about everything from sports and movies and even music! (He likes The Black Eyed Peas too! EEEP! Somebody pinch me!)
As excited as I was about our blossoming friendship, I didn’t want to force his hand by being the first to propose an out-of-office excursion. I was patient, even cool during our frequent chats. And then one day it happened! He said he had an extra ticket to the Cavs game that weekend and asked if I wanted to go. (um, duh! yeah!)
I felt so cool walking around Cleveland with my new black friend that night! You could tell that everyone was looking at me and thinking, “Check out that guy with the black friend! Now there’s a dude who knows how to operate!” It was like a dream come true!
Things have really blossomed since then. We went to The Roots concert together! We were in the same fantasy football league! We and our girlfriends even all went to see the movie “Be Cool” together! (Bad movie, but I still had a blast!)
Dwante came over to my parents house for dinner last week, which was a huge step in my eyes. I didn’t have to beg him or anything! He joked with my dad and he ate whatever my mom put in front of him. Grandpa, (a notorious bigot) made a couple of off-color remarks that could have been construed as prejudice but Dwante just politely brushed them aside. He’s so awesome!!!
BBFF!
Of course we have our problems. For example, I notice that he tends to ignore me when we are around his black friends. It’s like he’s a different person all of a sudden I’m not special to him any more. And that hurts. But I think that with time, his friends will accept me too and I’ll be “part of the gang”.
In case you can’t tell, I’m positively glowing right now, and I hope this friendship never ends! But if it eventually has too, I hope I can at least keep it going until I get married.
That way he can be in the wedding party, which would make all the pictures look so much cooler!
I have a black friend too! My black friend doesn't ignore me around other black people but he does talk differently. It's like he speaks two languages: street and whitey. I have always wondered which one is his native language, because he grew up in a pretty much all white area (except for his dad and mom and brother) but he's really good at talking black! My black friend has dreadlocks and has that really cut-without-working-out black guy body, so when you put me next to him he looks really black. Or maybe I just look really white. Hmmmmm...

If I am white person who has a black friend can I wear a striped shirt? Wouldn't that make him feel that he's inferior to me? Like I'm being "the Man." Wouldn't that be perceived as bigoted?
Or, what if the black person is already wearing a striped shirt? If I wore one too would it seem as though I was trying to be "black?"
Confused in DC.

This is very emotional for me because I too had a black friend. We used to "hang" together and he even called me "nigga". I felt so honored to have this title bestowed upon me. As you know, not just any non-black can be called "nigga" only those of us who are cool. They don't just accept anyone.
Anyway, I "ran" with a group of black friends, sort of like Jane Goodall with the gorillas, I came to feel that I was "one" of them. Since then my friend lost his Jay Ohh Bee (that's job for you non cool people), and he blames white racism for the loss of his job. I agree, blacks have been wronged so if they don't want to work we should pay them anyway. Now he doesn't return my calls or anything.
It's been so long I am losing my blackness. Fitty cent sounds awful to me and I can't bring myself to vote for blacks in american idol. Oh god, someone help me. If I can't be black I don't want to live!

The closest thing I ever had to a black friend was my white roommate. He was about as white trash as could be until he met some black dudes. That guy did a complete 180 and turned into the "blackest" white guy I have ever met. He traded in his old Vans for some Lugz and started leaving words out of sentences. Hockey for basketball. Steak for chicken. Beer for weed. Cigarettes for cloves. You name it.
He pretty much became the bitch of all his black friends. He would pick them up whenever they called, buy them shit, and pretty much do whatever else they asked.
You may be laughing (and so am I) but it is kind of sad seeing that everything I just wrote was true. I couldn't make that up.

Sorry to any brothers out there offended by my "black" joke.

Such a great friend - always there when I need him, and boy do the ladies love him! He gets me more tail than i know what to do with! He's loyal, hard working, and full of energy. He licks my feet whan I ask him to, and knows his place - willl do anything his 'massa' tells him. Sometimes when he's bad I have to chain him up in the yard, but not that often. He licks his asshole a lot more than I think he should, particularly when we have company, but the poor guy's got no thumbs and can't hold a wad of paper so wiping isn't exactly an option. Yep, my black labrador iis the best friend a guy could have.
