FALLUJAH (AP)- Hard-liner and ultra-conservative Islamic cleric Muqtada Al-Sadr announced this week plans to eliminate eye holes in the traditional burka worn by Islamic women. We can no longer tolerate women looking at things Al-Sadr proclaimed. Woman that can see and look at things will then want to speak, perhaps, even forming their own opinions about the things that they see. We must act now and protect ourselves from these dangerous women. He continued. I am afraid of women. What I mean is that I am afraid of women getting too powerful. They are dangerous and we need to keep them under tighter wraps.
Al-Sadrs calls for womans vision reform was met with little initial resistance. One woman in attendance cleared her throat during the announcement and was immediately stoned to death. It was later ruled that the Great Satan had given her a cold, so her killing was just. As a concession, Al-Sadr offered making the bags (burkas) larger to allow women to carry chairs and things to sit on inside their bags (burkas) should they get tired.
The majority of resistance came later on in the form of one Iraqi pioneers in womans rights, Soumaya Ghannoushi. Many call her an outspoken womens advocate and a pioneer for women but really, you can call her anything you want. She wont be able to talk back to you in public. Nevertheless, she was not afraid to voice her own feelings in regard to the proposal after she was granted the right to speak in public by both her husband and a local mullah who confirmed that she wasnt a demon by having her wade in a pool of water to see if it would boil or turn to blood or both which it did not.
Ghannoushi spoke out mildly against the proposal during a womans symposium held in a cave just outside of Al-Ramadi. The event was attended and closely monitored by several Islamic clerics who were there to gain some perspective into womens issues to make sure that none of the women violated Islamic code. Part of Islamic code forbids women to speak unless it is in a cave. The clerics tried very hard to make sure that all the womens voices and ideas stayed in the cave.

At the symposium, Ghannoushi offered the suggestion of keeping the eye holes so that she could, as she put it, see. To the surprise of many, the suggestion of keeping the eye holes was widely accepted and even praised by some of the clerics.

There is more to it than seeing said cleric Isalami Salam. I think we can allow them (women) to continue to see and perhaps if we feel that the women are looking at something too long we can do what weve always done and blind them with knives. It is a tradition as old as time. My father blinded my mother and sisters and, Allah willing, my sons will blind my wife and daughters as well.
Ignoring traditions, others, like Cleric Saheed Raman, pointed the finger squarely at men. It is up to the husbands to make sure their wives are satisfied. He said. If a woman speaks out it might be because she is not happy with her marriage or her life at home. This is when we should reach out to the husband and show him how to gain his wifes respect by beating her on the street in front of her family.
All seemed pleased with Ghannoushis assessment however it wasnt clear whether or not the ban on eye holes would be put into effect, after Ghannoushi accidentally spoke out of turn and was immediately beheaded. The remaining women were all drowned in the Euphrates River for having witnessed the callous disregard of Islam.

I have two questions: do you think if Christians did this we would have page long editorials explaining how the Danish paper was insensitive for publishing these images? And second, do any of these 'protestors' (actually, easily led hoodlums and people of lesser genetic and social ilk) work?
